Raízen will have to renegotiate part of its BRL 25 billion in tax contingencies

In an article published by BrasilAgro, Leo Lopes, tax attorney at FAS Advogados in cooperation with CMS, comments on the tax impacts involved in Raízen’s financial restructuring plan.
The company reported approximately BRL 25 billion in tax litigation, classified as probable and possible losses, and indicated the need to renegotiate part of these liabilities, particularly at the federal level, as a relevant step toward advancing its financial reorganization.
The case reinforces the importance of strategic tax management in large-scale transactions. For companies operating in the energy, agribusiness, infrastructure, logistics and financial market sectors, significant tax liabilities may affect debt renegotiations, capital structure, risk perception, corporate governance and relationships with creditors and investors.
